The Amazing Race! (Triathlon)

Yesterday we had our Year 3 Triathlon/Biathlon.  Everyone swam, biked and ran until they were puffed!  Below is Jade's poem about it:

I'm ready for this!
My go now,
I'm really nervous.

Away you go!
3 laps of the pool,
jumped out,
raced up the hill.

I slipped on my shoes,
jumped on my bike,
starting to pedal,
faster and faster,
finished 3 laps!

I ran for my life,
finished my 3 laps,
ran to the finish line,
4th place,
High five!

Sprinkles

Today Harlan bought his rabbit, Sprinkles, to visit our class!

Snow white rabbit,
ruby red eyes,
 floppy ears,
 sniffling nose.

Small jumping movements,
Nibbling quickly on carrots,
Trying to jump out,
Wanting to be free!

Athletics Day

Devlin was a champion at our Athletics Day last week.  Here is his summary of the day...

At Athletics Day, I came first in sprints, first in long jump and came second in high jump.  In sprints my legs went phenomenally fast until my legs went full speed.  On Long Jump I ran as fast as I could to the board and jumped.  My legs looked like coils.  On High Jump I felt like I was going to hit the bar but I made it!

Our 'made-up' stories

Last week we had a go at writing our own short stories.  They had to have a setting, characters, problem and solution.  We then presented them in different ways.  Some of us decided to make videos.  We haven't done this before so learnt a lot!  Here are a couple:

Coding: Scratch Jnr

We have been doing Scratch Jnr.  It teaches you how to make instructions for animations.  You can make characters go slow or fast or repeat actions.  You can design characters and backgrounds and make them talk.  This week our project was making an animal race animation.  You should try it too! - By Devlin & Isabella

Dance Off!!

Last Friday we had a Christmas Festival and each year group had to do a hip hop dance.  Ours was to 'Magic' by B.O.B.  The video quality might not be very good but you get the idea!  It was awesome!

Here is Ayesha's writing about it:

"Come on, lets go," I yelled as I raced across the room getting my dress on and my black pants.  My cousin Kennedy was eating pie and my brother was on the computer.  "Lets go!" Mum yelled.  I raced out the door.  We went in the car to school then I realised that the dance had started.  I ran across to sit down with our class and I felt a bit nervous!  Mrs Gilbert said, "Year 3, it's your turn!"  I was feeling nervous because it's not my favourite dance.  I got into my position and then I heard the music go and started to dance.  It was really scary with all the people watching us.

NUDE Food!

We are an 'Enviro School' and love looking after our environment.  One part of this is reducing our rubbish.  Anna & Isabella have made a Pic-Collage to remind you about 'Nude Food...'

Earthquake Report

We were really shocked to feel and hear about the earthquake last week.  We hope all our blogging friends in Wellington and Christchurch are ok!

Here is Hannah's earthquake report writing:

Last night there was an earthquake. It went BOOM BOOM, it was near christchurch. But families felt it from hamilton and Auckland. WOW that's amazing. It must of been a big one. I said OMG there was an earthquake that was seven point five and that is very big I was amazed by that.

The Droplet Story

Yesterday Mrs Blackwell was teaching us about water.  Here is a story Devlin wrote about a droplet called Bob and what happens to water:

One day there was a droplet called Bob.  He was floating in the sea and then the sun appeared.  It made Bob so hot he started to fly up to a cloud.  It was called evaporation.  When there were heaps of droplets in the cloud it got too heavy and it started to rain.  He fell out of the cloud and plopped into the river.  Bob floated down the river but got sucked into the water pipe and came out in a tap.  Then the plug got pulled out and he went down the whirlpool, down the drain and back to the sea.

Music Performance

On Monday we performed some songs for our parents.  We have all been learning either choir, recorder, ukulele or glockenspiel.  Here's a video of one of our songs...

Guy Fawkes

We have been watching a few videos like this one about where Guy Fawkes came from and why we have it.  Just in case you do not know the story, here is an explanation of Guy Fawkes:

Over 400 years ago there was a man called Guy Fawkes.  He did not like the law of the King.  So Guy Fawkes got together with some of his friends.  They found a way under the Parliament and smeared gun powder all around the whole area.  A letter got sent to the King saying, "You are in danger," so the king sent soldiers to capture Guy Fawkes.  They found him under Parliament with all the gun powder before he blew it up.  They saved the king and now people have parties with fireworks!

So now when you're letting off fireworks this weekend you will know why!

The Camping Trip

We have been doing a lot of drama this term.  Here is a video of Isabella, Sushviq, Haokun and Devlin acting out a poem called "The Camping Trip."  Look out for facial expression, gestures and how we use levels (standing up high or being down low) because we have been working on that!

We love climbing!

Last week we did some writing about climbing trees.  We are not usually allowed to climb the trees at school so we had a lot of fun!  Some people in our class hadn't climbed a tree before!  After climbing we did some writing about it using our senses.  Let us know what you think!  Here is Julia, Paapa and Rebecca reading theirs:

Warrior Lizard

Image result for colourful reptile holds up a twig

This photo, taken by Anup Deodhar/Barcroft Images was in the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards.  We have been writing descriptive sentences about this reptile.  Here are some:

Handsome lizard samurai, in shimmering, rainbow armour,
He was standing like he ruled the kingdom
Scales like armour,
Twig for a sword.

Can you think of any other ideas?

Water, water, water!

Today we did an experiment on water with Mrs Blackwell.

We got our drink bottles and tipped the water out on the ground.  Then we drew with chalk around the water.  We came back later and looked at the water but it was all gone!

The water cycle:
The water in the ocean evaporates into the clouds, the clouds move, the water is to heavy for the clouds so the water drops onto the ground and soaks into under-ground rivers. Or it could land in a river. Then the river [or under ground river] will take it back to the ocean.

Out of Africa!

Last Thursday we went to a concert at Hillcrest High School.  It was very cool.  We were really proud of the awesome job they did.

Some of our highlights were:
- The lights turning off (Katie)
- The power dance was amazing (Samuel)
- The crocodile dancing because we got to be in the show! Check out the photo! (Te Aranga)
- We really liked their costumes because they were colourful and they had real detail (Parth)
- The haka was good and we were impressed with how loud they were! (Devlin)

Great concert Hillcrest!

Buried Alive!

Harlan from Sandy Beach School was buried alive this morning.  He nearly died in the sandpit today at morning tea time.  He is only 7 and a half years old.  Max, Lars and Zeke, his so called friends, buried him alive in the sand.  Harlan said, “it felt soft at first but hard when I tried to get out.”  He was scared and happy because it felt nice.  He couldn’t breathe very well though so he ripped the sand off.  When he got out he had sand in his hair, on his lips and all over his arms and legs.  He had to wash it off before he went to class.  We are very lucky to still have him alive!

Cross Country

A few weeks back we had our school Cross Country.  Everyone trained hard for the big day and gave the race their best shot!  We are super proud of Hannah for winning the girls race and Devlin for getting 5th in the boys.  Our perseverance shout-outs go to Jade, Zeke and Te Aranga who gave it a go even though it got tough!  Awesome running everyone!
